Mountain Khakis Field BagĀ

My Field Bag was an anniversary gift from Kurt. I love how rugged, beautiful and functional it is. I usually don't carry bags or purses, I rather put things away in my cargo pockets but I needed a new bag to carry my computer equipment safely. I've owned several bags over the years and this one is my favorite.

It's functional. As compact as the bag looks, I'm able to carry laptop, iPad, hard drive, battery chargers, pencil case and note pad all together safely. The bag's interior has two roomy compartments and a detachable zipped pocket. The exterior has a zipped pocket and an open sleeve. I love the simplicity of the design. I'm able to put my gear away in a matter of seconds without having to struggle with zips, clips and tight spaces.

It's durable. When we are out and about, there are more important things than worrying about a bag or its content. The material is thick enough that I don't think twice when I set the bag on the ground. The waxed canvas and darker color has helped with stains, dirt and rain.

It's beautiful. The design is simple, the combo of leather and canvas is timeless. The details are what get me the most. The interior zipped pocket features a topographic map, on the strap the logo is embossed in the leather, the clip buckles are made out of robust brushed metal. Even if harmony and beauty are not my focus when I go to grab my laptop, my mind picks up on those details and they promote contentment and creativity in me.

Nikon DF DSLR

When our Un Petit Monde photo project started in June of 2010, I was using a Nikon D2x DSLR and a 80-200mm lens with extension tubes. Around 2011 I progressed to the D7000 paired with a 10.5mm fisheye. Although that combo helped me to define my style of shooting, I still didn't have the perfect setup.

When the Nikon Df first hit the market, I was very intrigued. The smallest and lightest body among Nikon FX-format models, it sounded like the perfect camera (for me). So last year I acquired one and paired it with the Sigma 15mm.

If we could, I'd buy another Df so I don't wear this one out too fast! I have nothing negative to say about it... except that the battery life is pretty short. That is especially true when using the live view function the way I do (I manually focus on all of my scenes using live view).

Very simply, a great camera. A little pricey but worth it.

Sigma 15mm Fisheye Lens

The primary lens I use for shooting miniatures is the Sigma - 15mm f/2.8 Fisheye. Of all the fisheye lenses on the market, it's the only one I know of with such a short focal length (which is essential to my technique for photographing the miniatures)! The Nikkor 10.5mm has a very short focal length as well, but it's a DX lens and doesn't perform well on my FX camera body.

I should mention that I was using the 10.5mm when I had the Nikon D7000 and Nikon D2x camera bodies. I really loved that lens! But the Sigma is doing a fantastic job paired with my Nikon DF.

One negative: The lens hood keeps falling off! It's lined with felt to create some friction and from what I gather, it's purpose is to keep the cap secure. It works 20% of the time ;\  I ended up lining the inside edge of the lens cap with a bit of gaffer tape to keep it from sliding off.
